Business & shopping district north of the Old Town

The modern "City" district north of the Old Town is Stockholm's business heart – Central Station, the pedestrianised Drottninggatan, Sergels torg and Kungsträdgården.

Stockholm's modern centre

Norrmalm, often simply called "City", is Stockholm's busy centre just north of the Old Town. This is where the pulse of the modern city beats: Central Station, the hub interchange T-Centralen, the landmark square Sergels torg with the Kulturhuset arts centre, and the long pedestrianised street Drottninggatan.

Shopping and culture

Norrmalm is the city's main shopping district – from department stores like Åhléns and NK to international brands. It's also home to the green Kungsträdgården park, the waterside Nationalmuseum, and the opulent Hallwyl Museum on the edge of Östermalm.

A convenient place to stay

Thanks to its central location and unbeatable transport links, Norrmalm is a practical base – especially for travellers arriving by train or on a short stay. It's a touch busier and less picturesque than the Old Town, but connected to everything.

Kungsträdgården

This central "King's Garden" in Norrmalm is Stockholm's green living room – a sea of cherry blossom in spring, an ice rink in winter, free to enter and full of events year-round.
